About The Peck House

Location:

Located just off of the main drag in Empire, CO on Sunny Ave..

The History:

The Peck House is a bed and breakfast that is revered as the oldest hotel in the state of Colorado. It is on the National Registry of Historic places. It is purportedly a well-known haunt in the region, visited frequently by fans of the paranormal. However, the owners of the establishment do not look kindly on paranormal investigators of any kind. Additionally, when the current owners purchased the property 28 years ago, they had it blessed and asked all the spirits in the hotel to leave. They vigorously deny that any paranormal activity has ever occured in the hotel and in fact close the hotel on Halloween in order to spurn those who might spend the night in the hotel and do activities that pertain to the paranormal.

James Peck and his three sons arrived in the area of Empire, Colorad in 1860 to start a new life. Mary Grace Parsons Peck arrived 2 years later with their things in an oxcart.

James Peck was killed by a fall from his carriage in 1880 on Union Pass. Gracie Peck, the young daughter of the Peck's, is said to have died suddenly of something, but she did not die in the hotel itself. Rather, she was taken to Denver and died there. This information has not yet been verified historically...it is still just a rumor. The Peck family retained ownership of the hotel until 1945 when Howard Peck, James' grandson died.

The Haunting:

The stairwell is said to be haunted by the spirit of a young girl who died at the hotel.

Observations:

However enticing it might be to visit this location, the owners of the Peck House are flatly against ideas of the supernatural and as such, it would be respectful to refrain from doing an investigation at this hotel.

Note the photos of Room #1. This room contains the original furnishings brought to the hotel by the Peck family. It is of Bird's Eye Maple.

In 1982 I lived in Denver and was on my way to Rocky Mountain National Park for the weekend. As we passed the Peck House, I suggested we stop there for dinner. It was delightful and we decided to rent a room for the night. Only Room 11, with twin sleigh beds was available..After reading a few chapters of my book, I turned off the lights, looked out the window at the snow capped mountains...and then turned over on my back...A man in a Black uniform with a red sash was standing at the foot of my bed looking directly at me...A young girl facing the opposite wall.. was in white, an aura of yellowish white light was surrounding her and her reddish/blond hair was vibrating ...the aura of her white light was illumating the man at the end of the bed. I was not frightened at first but horror set in as it looked as if she would turn and look at me .... and I felt if she had a scary face, that I would die of a heart attack. it as then that I grunted in fear and my partner work up and they disappeared. Early the next week I went to the library and my research into the Peck history...the man at the end of the bed was Pecks son who died of acoholism in the house and the uniform was a Masons uniform which appeared in a group picture of him and his fellow Masons..the young girl at end of the bed was Pecks daughter who died of Unknown causes. The owners were very angry and denied the possibility of the reality of this haunting.
