About Spring Ranch Bridge

Take Hwy 74 to Spring Ranch. The haunted bridge is located 1/4 of a mile south of the townsite.

The History:

In 1885, Tom Jones and his sister, Elizabeth Taylor were in a dispute with neighbors and unwittingly decided to purchase a shotgun in order to ensure their personal protection. All of the other townspeople owned rifles.

One day, a wagon and several men were cutting timber at Little Blue River on a piece of land that Elizabeth claimed to own. A gunshot was heard, Elizabeth was seen running to her house and a wagon driver was dead with half of his head blown away. This was obviously the result of a shotgun blast and not a rifle.

Thus, because it would be awhile before the local judge could consider the case, the locals decided to take care of the matter straight away by hanging Tom Jones and his sis, Elizabeth. "They were put on horses, on a sandbar in the river. The nooses were tightened around their necks, and a gun was fired to scare the horses. The horses took off and left Tom and Elizabeth hanging to die. Some say that the gun that was fired was Elizabeth's gun."

Elizabeth Taylor was the only woman to ever be lynched in the stat of Nebraska. There is a bridge over the Little Blue River supposedly located at the same spot as the lynching drama. It is old, but probably not the original bridge.

The Haunting:

Reports say that on a quiet night, underneath the bridge, one can hear the events that played out at this location.

Observations:

I would be curious to know whether the events play out on cue (unlikely) or if they tend to be more readily observed on the date when the lynching actually took place (more likely). I have not found any information about when the exact date was that Tom Jones and Elizabeth Taylor were "lynched" as yet.

They were lyched on March 15, 1885... I've seen pictures of the tombstones but have yet to visit the cemetery. We were at the bridge and ghost town yesterday in the middle of the day, and it just "felt" creepy - there are houses there that people obviously live in but we saw no one... i would like to visit the cemetery next but we weren't sure as to a location

I am putting together a book of stories written by my grandmother who lived there, one of them is about Tom & Elizabeth. Are pictures of the tombstones or the area available online?

Me and some friends went there tonight. The cemetery is on a road right after the second bridge, its a very long dark road but nothing happened when we went there. It's kinda hard to find at night but if your going south its right after the second bridge.

We just visited the cemetary last night. One thing that has occured in the past when I go "ghost hunting" is battery drainage. When a spirit tries to manifest itself, it will draw energy from the things around it. My friend Annie and I's phones (both of which are only a few months old) had a full charge, but in the cemetary they were both chirping the "low" noise at us along with the dreaded red battery. 11 members of our investigative team were there, and we use the TAPS ghost hunting rule that "nobody is to go anywhere alone" Mainly we stayed in one large group, trying to minimize the fact the owner of whos property rests partially in Spring Ranch territory, gets angry and will come and chew you out. Anyways, Several of us had the feeling that someone was watching us from behind a fallen tree at the edge of the cemetary near the grave of a little boy who had been killed at a young age. My friends Annie, Abby, Liam Trent, Laura and I got really bad feelings that we shouldn't be here and neede to leave any time we were around Elizabeth Taylor's grave. And Laura and I personally did not like the feeling of having our backs face a more delapidated part of the cemetary...we would get major chills down our spines and I would get a minor stomach ache. All in all we came away from the cemetary with a little less experiences than we had been hoping for. But the things we did experience were quite eerie. :)

Today, i went to springe ranch for a funrasier with my family. Not knowing anything that ever went on there, sense it was my first time there...But sense this is the kind off stuff i'm interesting in, i got hooked! so i've tried my hardest talking to my grandmother for history there. The next time i go i'll get pictures! and everything possible! but when i went acccrosed that bridge...wow, chills on my spine! and went i went to the cemetery the same feeling. When i went to the cemetery there was a seperate part of about 6 or 7 plots about 30 yards away from the main part. They all have different last names and i'd like to know what that was about? Today, was so interesting and i loved it! i'd like for someone that know's about that to email me about that question at ashrenben@yahoo.com so i can get farther with my research! Thanks.

the story is not correct my grandfather was rased in Spring ranch and in fact some clame my grate grandfather could have been in the linching group that hung them, elizabith and her son was convicted of stealing cows from a neibors and her family was trouble makers in the area so a group of Neibors got together and removed her from her home and hung her with her son one after noon.

Emmet is right. Everyone thinks that just because the bridge west of Spring Ranch is old, it *must* be where the Taylors were hanged. It wasn't. Oh, and if you visit the cemetery, be respectful of the dead. Also remember that there is a large potter's field, so you may be stepping on graves without even realizing it.

I have not been there yet, a good friend of mine went just last night... He said that as he walked across the bridge that you heard a large loud scratching noise, and then you could hear as it sounded someone to be in the area... I am very very skeptical of these things, I dont really believe anything until I see it. My friend Chris was shoken up all morning over this! I begged and pleeded for him to take me there this morning (4 am so still dark) but something there had scared him so bad, he fears going back> I finally convienced him to take me there so we are going at the strike of midnight tonight! I am overly excited! we did not know at all about the cemetery behind there at all... Chris didnt make it even barely on the second bridge but I am hoping we can get past there to the cemetery!!! I am a picture freak! so I will take plenty of pictures!!!! We are going on this frenzy of haunted places to help prove if a place is truely haunted or not! I hope that just taking random pictures of the haunted places will show things that we can not see! wish us luck! `Jay Jay

Okay so we went last night, we went with a small group of friends, and it was creepy but I personally didnt see anything, we have few pics, that i will send in!!! one of my friends swore she saw the "witch" and swore she felt something touch her hand which was outside the car taking pictures, but no one else did, we all did feel a negative presence but no one else felt or saw anything else. we were all to scared to get out of the car though we did drive back and forth over the bridge at least 6 or 7 times. I have some more friends whom want to go out there, so we will see! look for pictures there is one where it looks like a dark figure is sitting on a log....

We have went back to this location several times, it is freaky, but we have only felt that we were maybe being watched... it is also said that the graveyard right beyond the bridge is to also be haunted even more then the bridge? We are some day going to check it out, unfortonately we have not been able to due to mud and not being able to get around it.
Jay Jay Posted: 08/31/2009
once again... we went back out to the bridge... Walked accross it and nothing, leaned over the sides looked and listened and still nothing... We finally got to the cemetery!!! I was very happy about that!!! It was pretty neat, a long walk (lots of mud car wouldnt go through) but it was neat! nothing creepy or out of the ordinary... Tom Jones and Elizabeth taylors graves are there. this was an unexpected trip so i did not have my camera :( but we're going back just to get pictures soon! Elizabeth Taylors grave has been probably recently visited, there were flowers on it and a cross neckless around the top of it. that was pretty neat I though!

I have pictures of actual spirits and orbs that inhabit Spring Ranche. My husband and I frequently venture out there. If anyone wants to see them, I would be happy to e-mail them to you.

My Daughter is at rest down there,She died at the age of 9.She would be turning 30 this mounth,Please respect her place of rest.We will be placing a stone soon, after the devil worshipers stole her last one,and tore the cemetery up.Please anyone who visits respect the dead, and emagine its you or a loved one resting there.Loving Mother.

The picture of the bridge is not the right one. The original bridge is still there. I know the people who own the property now. And Candy i'm very sorry for your daughter. I have not been out there for quite some time and I will respect your wishes. Devil worshipers in places like that are a sad excuse for people needing to find better things to do. I'll poat up the pictures I have.

My son had a strange experience at the Spring Ranch cemetery about a year ago. He and his college roommate had come home to hunt for the weekend. They were in that general vicinity and my son told his friend about Spring Ranch and the lynching of Elizabeth Taylor/Tom Jones. Of course, the friend wanted to see the place. My son had recently downloaded a "ghost detector" app on his phone and had activated it at the road leading to the cemetery. As they entered the cemetery, his phone lit up with numerous dots, which is suppose to indicate ghosts. By this time, it had became dark. As they were standing in the cemetery, my son told the friend of the numerous acts of vandalism to the grave stones that had occurred in the past. All of a sudden his phone (with the ghost detector still activated) said the words "very bad" and then several seconds later, it said "get out"! Of course, they quickly jumped into the truck and left the cemetery. As they were going down the hill to the road, his pickup headlights kept blinking on and off and continued to do so for about a mile down the road. I'm sure there is probably some logical explanations to this (short in the wiring of the truck, phone app had GPS built into it indicating the location was a cemetery, etc). Nonetheless, it made me a believer of paranormal activity! Plus it's a great story to tell during the "Witching Season" aka Halloween!!
