About Shilo Inn Suites Hotels | International Dunes Hotel

Salt Lake City, Utah

Salt Lake City is the capital of Utah. It has a population of just under 200,000 residents.

Salt Lake City was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young and his Mormon disciples. It was originally named “Great Salt Lake City” because of the nearby Great Salt Lake. In 1868, the city was renamed “Salt Lake City”.

Though Salt Lake City is the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), less than half of the population of Salt Lake City is Mormon today.

Shilo Inn Information:

According to Desert News, March 16, 2003, in 1978, a man who called himself Immanuel David was leading a religious cult, claiming that he was God. At the age of 38, Immanuel David drove his truck to Emigration Canyon and killed himself by sticking a hose from the tailpipe into the passenger compartment of his car. The FBI was investigating his involvement in the cult.

The David Family lived in a $95/day room at the International Dunes Hotel (now known as the Shilo Inn) in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Three days later, his wife, Rachel, coaxed or threw their seven children (Elizabeth, 15, Rachel, 14, Joshua, 10, Deborah, 9, Joseph, 8, David, 6, and Rebecca, 5) from the balcony of Room 1105 on the 11th floor of what is now the Shilo Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. Rachel then jumped out of the building herself. Horrorfied high-rise construction workers who were building a hotel across the street screamed at her to stop killing the children.

Most of the David family died on West Temple below the Shilo Inn balcony. The 14 year old daughter, Rachel apparently survived, but with many injuries, including brain damage. She lives in a wheelchair and survived only because she landed on the bodies of her siblings.

Ghosts and the Paranormal at the Shilo Inn in Salt Lake City, Utah:

Near the lobby, at the indoor pool, some have reported hearing disembodied laughter. The pinball machine located on upper floor near an exit at the Shilo Inn in Salt Lake City is said to play by itself.

Disembodied whispers have been heard in Room 1105.
