About Northern School Supply Warehouse | Hall and Robertson Building

Fargo, North Dakota

Fargo is the largest city in North Dakota with a population of about 96,000 people. It is the Cass County Seat in southeastern North Dakota.

Fargo was founded in 1871. It was an early stopping point for steamboats on the Red River in the 1870's and 1880's. The city was originally named “Centralia” but renamed “Fargo” in order of the Northern Pacific Railway director and Wells Fargo Express Company founder, William Fargo.

Interestingly, in the 1880's Fargo became known as the “divorce capital” of the Midwest because of its lenient divorce laws.

The proprietor of a grocery store started the whole city on fire on June 7, 1893 when she dumped ashes outside on a windy day (whoops.). The fire destroyed 31 blocks of downtown Fargo. In 1957, the city was hit by an F5 tornado. After both events, Fargo rebuilt.

Information about the Northern School Supply Warehouse:

Northern School Supply was founded in 1911 by Fred Hutchinson and Walter Stockwell. The school supply business was moved into the 52,000 square foot Hall and Robertson building 1920. On October 31, 1997, the Northern School Supply closed after being in business for 86 years. The Hall and Robertson building was purchased by School Specialty, Incorporated. In 2000, they announced their plans to demolish the historic building. School Specialty, Inc. tried to donate the Hall and Robertson building to Fargo, but the offer was declined.

Great Plains chairman and CEO Doug Burgum bought the building in 2001 to save it. The building was donated for use to the North Dakota State University. Its renovations were to be completed by 2003.
