About Fort Bridger State Historic Site

History:

Fort Bridger was established by James Bridger in 1842 and 1843 who established a trading post and a blacksmith shop at this location. From 1850 to 1858, Fort Bridger was actually located in Utah territory. In 1868, this area was officially annexed by Wyoming.

Fort Bridger was a location that was heavily contested for ownership by James Bridger and Brigham Young. A number of small battles were fought to gain control of the location. The Fort itself is today a state park. .
