About Diphtheria Hill

Location:

Clay Center is located about 50 miles northwest of Manhattan, Kansas. It is located at the junction of US-24 and K-15.

There is a hill outside of Clay Center, Kansas that lies beyond the Republican River Bridge which is 1-2 miles west along Route 24. Just beyond the bridge, there is a hill and at the top of the hill is a dirt road that veers off the main road. This dirt road leads into the cemetery.

According to the Central Oklahoma Paranormal Studies group, who visited this location, the cemetery known as Diphtheria Hill is located on a busy stretch of highway at a curve and the driveway into the cemetery and up the hill is not graveled or paved. The cemetery is located about 100 feet away from the busy highway. The Central Oklahoma Paranormal Studies group also noted that it could be difficult to navigate particularly in rainy or wet weather and that turning around to go back down the hill could be challenging.

History:

Clay Center, Kansas was established in 1875. It is the county seat of Clay County.

According to the Central Oklahoma Paranormal Studies research on Diphtheria Hill, victims of diphtheria were carried to the top of this hill because residents of the nearby community were afraid that the dead might contaminate the water supply. Sadly, some of the victims were rumored to have been buried alive.

Paranormal Reports:

Reports of disembodied voices of children and disembodied crying sounds. Also reports of feelings of uneasiness, strange light phenomena recording on film, and orbs.

Diphtheria hill is not just West of Clay Center. There is a small cemetary there, but that is not what you are looking for. The hill is located about 4 miles south on Frontier Road. It is south and east of the intersection of 14th and Frontier.
