Cry Baby Creek Bridge

Greenville, Alabama is the site of a grizzly murder that took place in 1930. Travis Dayton killed his wife and newborn child using an axe and a pistol and until very recently their bodies had not been recovered. Indeed, the infant’s body has still not been found. However, the remains of Travis’ wife, Lucille showed up in the basement of the house where she lived a very reclusive life after marrying Travis.

Though many reports say that Cry Baby Creek is a bridge where a car accident threw a young infant into a ditch where it died, it seems probable that the tale actually comes from this gruesome murder back in the 30’s. Travis Dayton parked his bloodstained car near a train trestle and though authorities searched there for the bodies, they were never recovered.

People report the haunt at Cry Baby Creek involves disembodied voices such as the sound of a mother crying out for her child and a baby crying. But it’s likely that the location of this haunt is askew. The train trestle in Greenville seems a more likely site for this particular haunt because it’s probable that the remains of the Dayton baby is still out there somewhere and the spirit of Lucille (which has often been reported at the top of the stairs of the Dayton house) perhaps visits from time to time.

Another bridge in the southern region of the United States that has a history related to an axe murder include Mary Jane's Bridge in Broussard, Louisiana. The story behind this bridge is based on an entirely different set of circumstances, namely serial axe murders that took place in the region. And of course, the mother of all axe murder haunts is the Villisca Axe Murder House in Villisca, Iowa, a staple haunt for anyone with a taste for haunted places where people died at the hand of an axe murderer.

How to Get to Cry Baby Creek:

the story kind of contradicts itself, it says Travis drove his bloody car to the bridge and threw the bodies off..but the sentance before that states that the remains of the wife were recently found in the basement of the house.
