About Boot Hill

Boot Hill is located just a few blocks from the Mansion on the Hill. There are signs that direct visitors to the exact location.

Facts and History:

Boot Hill is situated at the top of a small, but rather steep hill. It is a very small cemetery, with a paved walkway that goes in a loop along the gravesites. A statue of a cowboy on a horse is located at the far north end of the cemetery. There appears to be native grasses at the site.

Boot Hill was a burial grounds for early settlers and transients in the Keith County area in the 1870's. Cowboys were buried in this cemetery with their boots on…thus the name, “Boot Hill”. Bodies were buried in canvas sacks and laid on several boards. Dirt was thrown into the grave, covering the body, and then the gravesites were marked with some sticks.

The Haunting:

There are reports of cowboy and pioneer apparitions in the cemetery.

Observations:

Bodies that have not been properly buried have a higher likelihood of producing a haunting. However, one then has to consider what a "proper burial" would be. Most cowboys at Boot Hill may have been satisfied being laid to rest on a couple of boards inside canvas bags. On the other hand, it may not have been adequate for some of them.

On the night of our pre-investigation, we didn't observe any paranormal phenomena, nor did we have any personal experiences. However, it was a bitterly cold, very windy night. We didn't spend a great deal of time at the cemetery because of this and so, although we didn't observe paranormal phenomena, it stands to reason that, being cemetery, if we stayed long enough, something would probably show up.
