About Argo Hotel

The History:

The Argo Hotel was built in 1911. It was called the New Meridian Hotel in 1923, but by 1935 had been converted into a mental institution called the New Meridian Sanitorium. The New Meridian Sanitorium remained under the ownership of Joseph and Mary Wiebelhaus until 1962 when Keith Everton purchased the building and then resold it to Dr. Charles Swift who used it for his medical practice/clinic.

In 1992, the current owner, Sandra McDonald purchased the building. In 1994, she renovated the building and made it into the Argo Hotel. It currently functions as a Bed and Breakfast and a steakhouse restaurant.

During the renovation, the skeleton of an infant was found inside a burlap bag in a concrete wall in the lounge.

Reports say that a young girl died in the basement of the Argo Hotel.

We arrived for our visit to the Argo Hotel in the wee hours of the morning, in the month of December 2008, just after Christmas. The place had been lavishly decorated for the holidays. There was greenery everywhere and little glass balls big and small hung from everything that had a spare branch. Our group was split into two different rooms. Neither of us had any personal experiences during our stay. Video recordings showed nothing abnormal happened in either of our rooms during the night either.

The hotel was rather quiet this time of the year with only a few other guests as Crofton is located in a part of Nebraska that is far beyond the major interstates and highways. We got up early for breakfast and spent some time chatting with the manager, who shared some of her personal experiences with us.

According to the hotel manager, the doctor has been seen in one of the main floor hallways a number of times.

The manager took us to a back room and showed us a picture hanging on the wall. This picture is purportedly a depiction of “Alice” the woman whose baby was found in the basement wall. She is the one is reportedly seen and heard regularly. The young woman looks to be black, which is only significant because Crofton, and the surrounding communities (with the exception of nearby Indian Reservations) have a predominantly white population. Alice's story is still somewhat obscure to us. How she came to live at the hotel and have her photo up on the wall is hard to say. The literature available at the front desk at the Argo Hotel, which includes 10 pages or so of history about the place, says nothing about the infant's skeleton found in the basement wall and nothing about Alice. But needless to say, the owner and the manager of the hotel both attest to there being frequent and regular paranormal events taking place at the Argo.

Parnormal Reports:

Claims have been made by employees and patrons that “inconsistent cold spots” have been experienced, flickering lights, and inexplicable shattering of drinking glasses has occurred.

There have been reports of “wailing” and “moaning” sounds. A woman is said to call out for her child. The sound of a baby crying has also been reported.

Pictures on the walls reportedly will move on their own.

Observations:

Lodging houses are typical sites for paranormal activity, however this location is unique because it was also once the site of a mental institution AND a medical clinic. Where ever human blood or body fluids are spilt, there is a heightened probability that a haunting will occur, particularly if there is fear involved or another strong emotion. Mental institutions may well be sites of paranormal activity because people who reside in the institutions often are at the opposite side of the spectrum (so to speak) from the magician-conjuror in terms of Self-Control and powers of Will...
